Anchor text is the clickable text in a link. It tells both users and search engines what the linked page is about. Using anchor text correctly is a small SEO task, but it has a big impact on rankings and indexing.

Many beginners make the mistake of using random or repeated anchor text. This confuses search engines and can weaken SEO. Proper anchor text helps Google understand your content structure and topic relevance.

The best anchor text is descriptive and natural. Instead of using words like “click here” or “read more,” use meaningful phrases that describe the linked page. For example, instead of “click here,” use “WordPress on-page SEO guide.” This gives clear context to Google.

There are different types of anchor text. Exact-match anchor text uses the exact keyword you want to rank for. Partial-match anchor text includes the keyword along with other words. Branded anchor text uses your brand or website name. Generic anchor text includes phrases like “learn more” or “this article.”

For internal linking, partial-match anchor text is usually the safest and most effective. It looks natural and avoids over-optimization. Exact-match anchors should be used carefully and not repeatedly.

Anchor text placement also matters. Links inside the main content of an article are more powerful than links in footers or sidebars. Contextual links placed within relevant paragraphs pass more SEO value.

Avoid using the same anchor text again and again for the same page. This looks unnatural and may confuse search engines. Instead, use variations that still describe the page clearly.

Another important rule is relevance. Only link pages that are closely related. Irrelevant links reduce user trust and SEO strength.
